Garrett Sanders

As the RFís executive vice president and chief operating officer, Garrett R. Sanders is responsible for effective, efficient and cohesive support of the Research Foundationís business operations and implementation of its strategic plan across the 31 SUNY campuses. His integrated functional team supports SUNY campuses with strategy and planning, communications, contract and grant administration, human resources, and sponsored program compliance.

Prior to joining the RF as assistant vice president for research in October 2008, Mr. Sanders served as assistant vice president for research and as director of the office for sponsored programs at the University at Albany between 1992 and 2002.

Throughout his career, Mr. Sanders has sought to provide high levels of service to faculty and researchers engaged in sponsored programs. He began his career as a presidential management fellow in the United States Department of Health and Human Services. While working at the Ordway Research Institute, Inc., a not-for-profit biotech corporation, Mr. Sanders started and directed its office of sponsored research. He served as assistant director of the office for research and project administration at the University of Rochester, and as a grants manager at the National Institutes of Health. Mr. Sanders also has served as a research administration and compliance consultant to universities, research institutes, and hospitals.

Mr. Sanders currently serves on the boards of the following SUNY-affiliated organizations: Downstate Technology Center, Inc.; BioBAT, Inc.; and BioBAT Holdings. (Learn more about these and other public/private partnerships supported by the RF.)

An active member of the National Council of University Research Administrators, Mr. Sanders received the Councilís Distinguished Service Award in 2005. He also serves on the editorial boards of two professional publications: Research Management Review and Report on Research Compliance. Mr. Sanders received a bachelorís degree from the University at Buffalo and a masterís degree in public administration from the University at Albany.
